You open your préfecture's website, click "book an appointment," and the answer is always the same: no slot available. It's not a bug, and you're not alone. Here's why it happens, and what actually works to get out of it.
Why slots disappear so fast
Each préfecture manages a limited volume of appointments based on the number of staff available at the counter. Rather than opening its calendar continuously, the administration publishes batches of slots at regular intervals, often at the start of the month, sometimes every Monday morning, depending on the préfecture and the process concerned.
The problem: everyone knows it, or eventually figures it out. Hundreds of people refresh the page at the same moment, for a number of spots that's sometimes only in the dozens. As a result, slots run out within minutes, or even seconds for the most in-demand processes (residence permit, naturalization, driving test).
The levers that actually make a difference
- Spot your préfecture's opening pattern. Many open their slots at a fixed time (often early morning) on a given day of the month. This pattern isn't always officially announced, but can be worked out by watching several weeks in a row, or by reading other users' reports on dedicated forums.
- Prepare your file before you even start looking for a slot. An appointment that opens up can be booked in a few clicks if all the required documents (proof of address, photos, forms) are already gathered. The time it takes to gather documents can be enough to lose the slot.
- Widen your search to the sous-préfecture if your process is available there too. sous-préfectures often handle fewer requests and therefore have slots that open up more easily.
- Compare appointment alert tools and automate the monitoring rather than refreshing manually: a tool that scans the site continuously and alerts you the moment a slot appears gives you the edge of speed, without spending your days on it.

If no slot appears despite everything
Start with the available options and avoid the illegal resale of appointments. Some préfectures stay stuck for several weeks, sometimes several months, on certain processes. In that case, several options exist alongside online monitoring: contacting the préfecture by mail or contact form explaining your situation (especially if a legal deadline is approaching), going through your town hall, which can sometimes point you to a dedicated desk, or reaching out to an association that helps with administrative processes if your situation is urgent.
Keep a written record of every attempt (screenshots, dates): in the event of a significant delay, this evidence is useful for an appeal or to demonstrate your good faith to the administration.
